On the Interpretation of High Velocity White Dwarfs as Members of the Galactic Halo
نویسندگان
چکیده
A detailed analysis of 32 of the 38 halo white dwarf candidates identified by Oppenheimer et al. is presented, based on model atmosphere fits to observed energy distributions built from optical BV RI and infrared JHK CCD photometry. Effective temperatures and atmospheric compositions are determined for all objects, as well as masses and cooling ages when trigonometric parallax measurements are available. This sample is combined with that of other halo white dwarf candidates and disk white dwarfs to study the nature of these objects in terms of reduced proper motion diagrams, tangential velocities, and stellar ages. We reaffirm the conclusions of an earlier analysis based on photographic magnitudes of the same sample that total stellar ages must be derived in order to associate a white dwarf with the old halo population, and that this can only be accomplished through precise mass and distance determinations. White dwarfs and Galactic dark matter
We discuss the recent discovery by Oppenheimer et al (2001) of old, cool white dwarf stars, which may be the first direct detection of Galactic halo dark matter. We argue here that the contribution of more mundane white dwarfs of the stellar halo and thick disk would contribute sufficiently to explain the new high velocity white dwarfs without invoking putative white dwarfs of the dark halo. Th...
متن کاملA Critical Examination of Halo White Dwarf Candidates
A detailed analysis of halo white dwarf candidates is presented, which is based on model atmosphere fits to observed energy distributions built from photoelectric or photographic magnitudes. Most of the candidates identified in reduced proper motion diagrams are shown to be too warm (Teff > 5000 K) and most likely too young to be members of the galactic halo, while the tangential velocities of ...
متن کاملD - Kinematics of White Dwarfs from the SPY - Project
We present kinematics of a sample of 107 DA white dwarfs from the SPY project (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY) and discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk, and halo populations. This is the first homogeneous sample of white dwarfs for which 3D space motions have been determined. Since the percentage of old stars among white dwarfs is higher than among main-sequence st...
متن کامل3D–Kinematics of White Dwarfs from the SPY-Project
We present a progress report on the kinematical analysis of the entire SPY (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY; see Napiwotzki et al. 2001) sample of about one thousand white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs. In a previous study (Pauli et al. 2003, 2006) 398 DA white dwarfs have been analysed already. Here we extend the study to 634 DA white dwarfs. We discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk...

We examine the claim by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) that the local halo density of white dwarfs is an order of magnitude higher than previously thought. As it stands, the observational data support the presence of a kinematically distinct population of halo white dwarfs at the >99% confidence level. A maximum-likelihood analysis gives a radial velocity dispersion a of σ h U =150 +80 −40 km s −1 a...
